How to configure the reverse lookup zone on the Windows DNS Server

Step 1: Open the ‘Start’ menu, go to ‘Administrative Tools’, and then select ‘DNS’ to launch the DNS Manager.

Step 2: In the DNS Manager, locate and click on the server’s host name in the console tree to view its settings.

Step 3: Find the ‘Reverse Lookup Zones’ folder under your server’s host name.

Step 4: Right-click on the ‘Reverse Lookup Zones’ folder and select ‘New Zone’ to initiate the New Zone Wizard.

Step 5: On the first page of the New Zone Wizard, click ‘Next’ to proceed.

Step 6: Choose ‘Secondary zone’ as the zone type you want to create and click ‘Next’.

Step 7: Input the network ID in the ‘Network ID’ field. This is the segment of your IP address that identifies the network. For instance, if your network IP scheme is 192.168.0.x, where x represents individual hosts, your network ID would be ‘192.168.0’.

Step 8: On the Zone File page, since a secondary zone will replicate the zone file from the master zone, there is no need to alter anything. Simply click ‘Next’.

Step 9: Verify the settings you’ve chosen are correct, and then click ‘Finish’ to complete the setup of the new secondary reverse lookup zone.
