What is Domain Grace Period and Redemption Grace Period?

The domain grace period is a set of rules that apply after a domain name registration has expired. During the domain grace period, the registrant or domain owner has the option to renew their domain name registration without incurring additional fees. The length of the domain grace period varies depending on the top-level domain (TLD) and the registrar.

The redemption grace period is a set of rules that apply after the domain grace period has ended. During the redemption grace period, the domain name is in a state of redemption and locked. It cannot be renewed or transferred. The registrant can still reclaim or restore the domain name during this time, but they will be required to pay a redemption fee to do so. The length of the redemption grace period also varies depending on the TLD and the registrar.

It’s important to note that if a domain name is not renewed or reclaimed during the domain grace period or redemption grace period, it will be deleted and may be available for registration by someone else.

generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, etc.)

For generic TLDs (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, etc.), you have a period of about 30 days after the actual expiration date during which you can still renew the domain at the regular rate. The domain goes into a redemption stage at the Registry for 30 days (often longer) if you don’t renew it during this grace period. The upstream providers may now put the domain up for sale.

As an owner, you still have the option to return the domain at this stage (if it’s not auctioned off) at a redemption fee plus its regular renewal cost. The domain goes into a PendingDelete stage at the Registry for 5 days if it is not recovered after redemption. On the 6th day, the domain should be released to the public for re-registration.
